I Refuse to Play the Content Generation Game

Shows an ipad, straw hat and earpods sitting on a bench with some purple flowers behind it

I spent at least a day every week producing social media content that generated zero revenue. I am not doing that anymore. Here is the full list of what I stopped, what I kept, and why the math finally makes sense.

Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

What I stopped doing, what I started instead, and why my business is better for it.

I spent the last year recovering from burnout. Not resting between projects, actual burnout that put me offline for the better part of 2025. And when I finally came back up for air and started assessing what had gone wrong, one of the clearest answers was this: I was wildly busy doing things that were not moving my business forward.

Content creation was chief among them. I would spend at least a full day every week designing graphics, writing posts, developing what is generously called “thought leadership” content, engaging in groups, and tracking metrics on the whole thing. At the end of the month, when I looked at what any of that had produced in actual revenue, it was a sobering number.

I am done with that version of marketing.

WHAT I AM NOT DOING

Free discovery calls. I stopped offering these because I had been burned too many times by no-shows, by calls that went nowhere, by ending each one feeling like I had failed a test I had not signed up to take. My time is valuable. I expect it to be treated that way. If someone wants to talk, they can book a 30-minute Operational Diagnostic Session for $250. It is not a sales call disguised as a conversation. It is actual work with actual value on both sides.

Creating content on a schedule. I have let go of the idea that I need to post 15 times a month to stay relevant. I post when I have something useful to say. The algorithm does not get to dictate my schedule.

Website design work. I genuinely enjoy website design, which is part of why I let it take over my business for a stretch. But it is also what led me straight into the worst burnout of my career. I am not offering it anymore, except for my own site, and I have had to actively train myself not to keep tweaking it.

Multiple “non-salesy” sales calls. I spent too much time trying to convince people who had not yet decided they needed what I offer. Calls that did not convert left me demoralized in a way that compounded over time. That is no way to run a client acquisition process.

New offers. I got deep into the trap of thinking the problem was always the offer. Changed it, rebuilt it, watched the same issues persist. The problem was never the offer. My current four offers and one upcoming digital product are fully built, tested, and grounded in real outcomes. They are staying.

Holiday promotions and seasonal campaigns. Same offers run year-round. I am not spending August through November building Black Friday marketing from scratch. That is a hamster wheel I have permanently stepped off of.

WHAT I AM DOING INSTEAD

Building relationships that bring in clients who are ready to do the work. Referral networks, business partnerships, conversations with people who are already aligned with what I offer. This is slower and less measurable in the short term, but the clients it produces are the right clients.

Delivering results that speak for themselves. My method is repeatable and produces measurable outcomes. When I do the work well, that is the best marketing I have.

Using AI to handle the things that used to eat my time. This one deserves more space, and I am writing a full post about it. But the short version: AI handles the content calendar, the prospecting research, the forms, the pages I do not want to build by hand. It has freed up significant bandwidth without adding headcount.

Getting in front of rooms of people. In-person opportunities to run the BYOB Workshop are a genuine priority. Speaking, teaching, and working with groups in a room is where I do some of my best work.

Taking my time. Every offer that goes live will be fully built before it launches. Materials ready, workflow mapped and tested, capacity built in. No more half-built offers sent out the door because I needed the revenue.

Practicing what I preach. I am documenting my own SOPs, implementing my own repeatable systems, building the operational foundation of this business the same way I build it for clients. If I am going to tell you to do it, I better be doing it.

Charitable giving. A portion of annual profits will go to a different organization each year. Literacy programs, pet shelters, and diaper banks are all on the list.

THE MATH NOBODY DOES

Here is the math that finally convinced me: if followers are a vanity metric that does not convert, every hour I spend producing content to grow that number is an hour that costs me money in time and produces nothing in return. The businesses I want to work with are not finding me through Instagram posts. They are finding me through referrals, through people who have seen the work firsthand, through direct conversations.

Marketing matters. Getting the sale is what matters more. Those are not the same thing, and I spent way too long optimizing for the first while ignoring the second.

As Kamala Harris would say, I am unburdened by what has been.

What is one thing you have stopped doing that freed you up for what actually matters? And what is the one thing you are committed to doing that is actually connected to revenue? Drop both in the comments.
